Neural therapy involves injection of procaine, an anesthetic, into the skin, scar tissue or areas associated with chronic pain. Pain or dysfunction commonly arises after an an illness, injury or insult to the body. These disruptions affect the autonomic nervous system (ANS) which is the regulator of the “automatic” functions of your body like digestion, circulation, temperature, breathing, hormone release, and immune system regulation. It essentially organ communication to and from the brain. The intent of neural therapy is to:

- Relieve chronic pain
- Calm inflammation
- Reduce complications associated with scar tissue
Neural therapy can be effective for addressing dysfunction of nerves anywhere in the body. It is frequently used to alleviate:
- Headaches & Migraines
- Numbness associated with scars
- Chronic pain
- Scars and adhesions associated with surgeries or injuries
- Immune support especially for chronic infections (sinusitis, tonsillitis etc)
- Arthritis (Knee pain, TMJ dysfunction etc)
- Pelvic pain and associated disorders
- Muscle tension and injuries
Illness, injury or scars can disrupt the fascia. Facia is like a wrapper that connects all muscles and organs in your body. A disruption in the fascia disrupts the flow of information from blood vessels and/or nerves. This disruption limits nutrition, oxygen, impulses to get to the area of your body that is suffering. While we commonly expect pain syndromes and dysfunction to arise at local site of injury, sometimes the effects can be experienced at distal sites. This is in part because of the fascial planes throughout the body. The injection of procaine acts like a “reset” to the nervous tissue in the surrounding area of injection. This allows the autonomic nervous system to recalibrate its signals and restore normal function to the nerves. The procaine has an immediate numbing effect, but the anti-inflammatory effects exceed the treatment. When the nerves can communicate appropriately, then neurotransmitters are regulated, inflammation and immune system are stabilized, and pain is reduced.
Frequently asked Questions
What can I expect during a treatment?
We would first have an appointment to determine “problem” areas and develop a plan. This first appointment could be billed to insurance. Then we would schedule and appointment for the injections based on the individualized treatment plan, this would not be billed to insurance. Sometimes the initial intake and injections this can happen on the same day, however the procaine is by prescription. We limit the amount of procaine injected per session.
We identify the area of the body we are working on, clean the area, and using small gauged needles we inject small amounts of 1% procaine subcutaneously (right below the skin). It can look like red welts that are usually gone before you leave. Sometimes we do deeper injections.
Injections are generally well tolerated.
How soon will I notice results?
As with most things, the results are highly individual. People can notice results immediately but often it can be noticed gradually over a few days. Sometimes one treatment is enough but often we’ll identify various target areas prior to treatment and develop a comprehensive plan to ensure you know what to expect for future injections.
How will I feel after injections?
Most injections are just beneath the skin. It is common to have transient bruising and redness at the site of injection. Sometimes there can be an emotional release or larger detoxification process. In our experience, people handle neural therapy with few side effects.
Why haven’t I heard of neural therapy before?
Neural therapy is not well known in the United States. It is used commonly in some in Europe and South America, where in some countries it is considered standard of care medicine.
How much does this cost and is it covered by insurance?
In the United States this is considered an “off label” use of Procaine. Neural Therapy has not been approved by the FDA and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. As such it is not covered by insurance. A single injection session is usually $120. More complicated injections or the addition of other medications may increase the cost, which would be discussed at the time of the appointment.
