In my September blog, “10 Back to School Cues for the Common Cold & Flu,” I promised to give you recipes to support your health over the upcoming months. So in addition to my Turmeric Tea, here is my Nourishing Immune Broth—another warm brew and one that can double as both a beverage and a snack.
Planning ahead with this recipe is key. Shop now for these ingredients and keep them in your pantry. As the common cold and flu can come on quickly, it’s great to have these ingredients on hand during the winter months.
Also, remember that when we are sick, it’s normal to feel disinterested in eating. In fact, short-term appetite suppression is one of the ways the body naturally heals itself when combatting a cold or flu. That said, we do need some sustenance, hydration, and nutrition, and this recipe will do the trick!
Dr. Silapie’s Nourishing Immune-Boosting Broth
10 cups | Water |
2 | Leeks or large onions, chopped |
4 | Celery stalks with leaves, chopped |
4 | Carrots, chopped |
10 | Garlic cloves, crushed |
¼ teaspoon | Black pepper corns, whole |
6 | Cloves, whole |
3-inch piece | Ginger, sliced |
10-12 | Shiitake mushrooms (dried is okay) |
2 | Parsley, large fresh sprigs |
1 | Rosemary sprig (or 1 tablespoon dried) |
1 | Lemon, juiced |
1 teaspoon | Salt |
Instructions: Combine all ingredients in a large soup pot, then cover and bring it all to a boil. Lower the heat and allow the ingredients to simmer for 45 minutes to an hour. Strain the stock and drink the broth right away. Refrigerate what remains and reheat as needed.
